【Event Recap】micro:bit Model Hovercraft Competition 2020-2021

Trumptech hosted another unmissable STEAM competition for Hong Kong schools! Over 50 teams from 9 primary schools and 22 secondary schools participated in the first-ever micro:bit Model Hovercraft Competition. The teams had to design and build their own all-encompassing Hovercraft, program it and remote control it in order to complete the three challenges.

The competition was held at our co-organising school, Tang King Po School, on the 10 July, 2021. The three challenges included the Speed Challenge, Rescue Challenge and Cargo Lifter Challenge, are designed to test the speed, control and load capacity of the hovercrafts respectively. They were no easy tasks and had put the students' STEM knowledge and coding skills to the test. All teams came with full preparation prior to the event, with effective lifting, thrust and direction control systems built and coded for their hovercraft; still, onsite adjustments were seen made to adapt to the mission maps.

To excel in the competition, teams should aim for the highest accumulated scores, with each of the scores relative to the performance ranking of each challenge.

Speed Challenge

The teams' hovercraft need to circle on the track twice within a limited time, and the team with the fastest finish time would gain the best ranking. Not only is it a demonstration of speed performance, it also looks out for the student controllers'  "steering" ability of its model using the matching console. In this year's event, this challenge stumped the Primary School Group with no teams able to complete the round and left the "The Fastest Hovercraft Award” idle.

Rescue Challenge

Several rescue areas are marked on the challenge map, and each has different difficulties to access and carries corresponding reward points. Teams need to plan their route strategically and set off their hovercraft forth and back between the base and their chosen rescue areas to obtain the points. The goal is to secure as many points as possible within the time limit.

Cargo Lifter Challenge

Teams have to add weights to their hovercraft, and travel a one-meter course from the starting point to the endpoint within a limited time. The heavier the weight, the better performance points they can score

To highlight the development of students' creativity and artistic potential, we also held the "My Favorite Hovercraft" design competition on Trumptech’s official Facebook page, and the teams with the highest number of votes can obtain the "My Favorite Hovercraft" Design Award.
