【Competition highlights】 FIRST® LEGO® League 2020-2021

FIRST® LEGO® League (HK) season 2020-21 has come to a perfect close at the annual award ceremony, with the STEM achievement witnessed and the joy shared amongst the teams, coaches, and families! As the Official LEGO® Education Partner and Authorised Organiser for the first time, Trumptech has transformed this internationally renowned STEM competition with an online model during the pandemic.

We are delighted to announce a record high participating number with over 700 students and 124 teams from 81 schools to join us in this explorative STEM season. We would like to take the opportunity to congratulate all the winners again, and with all the teams we celebrate an exciting journey of personal growth in creativity, computational thinking, teamwork and 21st-century essential skills. Besides, Trumptech also introduced FLL Discover, Hong Kong’s first STEAM competition for kindergarteners, aiming to extend learning to and nurture more creators from an early age!

Special thanks to every partner who dedicated their effort to make the online competition possible and wonderful despite the many challenges. They include our Strategic Partner the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups, our Co-organisers the Hong Kong Association for Computer Education (HKACE) and the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET). We are also beyond grateful to have HKSKH Bishop Hall Secondary School and the GBA Youth AI Development Centre as our venue support.

An unleashing of creativity and problem-solving skills were observed in the projects submitted. Responding to the annual theme, PlayMakers and RePlay, students conducted research and came up with unique solutions to promote a healthy lifestyle. Teams of FLL Discover inspired us with playground designs that can accommodate people from all walks of life. For teams from FLL Explore and FLL Challenge, teams presented their solutions, with the use of models, posters, and robotic creations, to our professional judges through the online submission and an online interview. It was indeed delightful to see the original ideas, some were certainly impressive which involved the building of a mobile app for fitness tracking and a basketball robot companion to motivate users to exercise.

The Overall winners of FLL Explore exhibited their model and shared their research findings and solutions with audiences at the award ceremony.

In addition, the teams of FLL Challenge also participated in the robot performance section which required them to strategically design a robot and plan a route to score on the annual mission map. Demonstration sessions were arranged at the award ceremony and live-streamed with the honoured presence of our winning teams. We hope that the new teams can have a taste of on-the-spot operation and coding program optimisation against a lab experiment under this year’s online model. May our next season offer teams with physical tournament experience and take the winning teams beyond the region and shine on the international arena of STEM exploration!
