【Event Recap】2021-2022 Sham Shui Po District Primary and Secondary School Robot Design Competition

“2021-2022 Sham Shui Po District Primary and Secondary School Robot Design Competition” has come to a close after months of thematic STEM learning! As the appointed operating contractor, Trumptech would like to express our gratitude to the organisers Sham Shui Po District Office and the Sham Shui Po School Liaison Committee, as well as the Sham Shui Po District Council, altogether bringing this creative competition to reality.

A big round of applause to the participants from 13 primary schools and 6 secondary schools from across the Sham Shui Po district, for their commitment to understanding the hygiene issues resulting from the lack of management of the three-nil building. With a twin goal of nurturing problem-solving skills and raising community awareness amongst students, all participating teams have to design and programme a robot to complete the missions on the simulated scene of a filthy patio canopy.

*Buildings without owners' corporations (OCs), residents' organisations or property management companies (PMCs).

Students attempted at the simulated scene to avoid the obstacles. the scene was set on a slightly inclined surface, which made it more challenging for the robots to move forward.

The competition was held at the Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (Haking Wong) on 18 December. It was an honour to have Mr. Caspar Tsui Ying-wai, JP, Secretary for Home Affairs, as the officiating guest to address the event and to present awards to winners.

Competition Overview

Teams need to design a robot with a LEGO ® Education SPIKE ™ Prime set to compete in the event which was composed of two challenges, the "Line Following & Obstacle Avoidance Match" and the "Rubbish Clearance Match".

The Line Following & Obstacle Avoidance Match

The line following robot needs to navigate through a designated track to reach the endpoint within the time limit whilst avoiding obstacles throughout. The robot will score by going through checkpoints while receiving a mark penalty on every contact of the obstacles. Teams will be ranked by their score and completion time.

Rubbish Clearance Match

Teams need to observe the distribution of rubbish on the map, gathering route information like the distance in-between actions and the angle of turns. Applying collected data to programme the robot, the teams will score by successfully clearing up the rubbish. The complication lays in the randomness of rubbish placement and the distraction of non-rubbish objects on the field, putting the recognition and execution accuracy of participating robots to the test.
